Wellness Wednesdays – Summer

By Andrew Phillips | October 21, 2015

Hello everyone, and yet another Happy Wednesday to you! This week’s Wellness Wednesdays features Summer, a lovely dog who has found her fur-ever home with Kendall at K9H20.20150715_114641

“Meet Summer.  Now 8 years old Summer was born near Salmon Arm, BC.
Her live birth was somewhat of a miracle as she has a deformed and rotated cervical vertebrae and scoliosis of the lower spine.  She could not wiggle like a normal pup so she stalled in the birthing process and it is thought that lead to oxygen starvation.  Thus she was birthed with neuropathy.  She cannot easily control her limbs. This condition could easily be compared to Cerebral Palsy. Luckily her mother did not abandon or hurt her as she definitely was a damaged pup.

Later in life, x-rays showed she may have had her back broken violently when she was approximately 2 months old.

Summer, (still unable to walk), and her mom were left by the side of a road. The local shelter took them in and the attending veterinarian gave Summer a chance to heal.  Summer’s mom was adopted.

At 6 months old Summer came to me as a foster.  She had begun walking and I fell in love with her gentle soul and her sense of humor.  She was only to stay one week but I never gave her back.

Summer walks awkwardly when she moves slowly.  This is similar to victims of stroke.  Once she adds speed to her gait she does quite well and gains balance and rhythm. She shows no signs of pain.

Summer’s favorite activity is going on long walks in the woods with a dog walker and 7 other dogs.  She loves the lake and chasing squirrels.  She is friendly in every environment and a joy in my life.”
